Frequently Asked Questions

ISO Container Manufacturing — 25 Frequently Asked Questions

APPL Containers Limited answers the most common questions about ISO shipping container manufacturing, specifications, ordering, certifications, and specialised containers (BESS, Cement Tank, Open Top). APPL is India's leading Make in India container manufacturer, based in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, with 15,000+ containers annual capacity.

Category 1 — ISO Shipping Containers

What is an ISO shipping container?

A standardized steel container built to International Organization for Standardization specifications, designed for intermodal freight transport by sea, rail, or road. Standard sizes are 10FT, 20FT, and 40FT, with defined weight limits and corner-fitting dimensions for crane handling worldwide.

What are the standard sizes of ISO shipping containers?

Three standard lengths: 10ft (3,048mm), 20ft (6,058mm), 40ft (12,192mm). All share a standard width of 8ft (2,438mm) and height of 8'6" (2,591mm). High-cube variants measure 9'6" (2,896mm).

How much weight can a 20-feet ISO container carry?

Max gross weight 30,480 kg, tare 2,250 kg, payload up to 28,800 kg (~63,493 lbs). Each has 52 securing rings with 1,000 kg resistance per ring.

What is a high cube shipping container?

A standard-length container (20/40FT) one foot taller than standard — 9'6" (2,896mm) instead of 8'6". The extra height adds ~15% volume, ideal for lightweight, voluminous cargo like garments and furniture.

Which certifications do ISO shipping containers require?

ISO 668, ISO 1496, CSC (Container Safety Convention), and IICL standards. Tank use additionally requires IMDG, CFR49, ADR/RID, and ASME compliance.

Category 2 — Container Manufacturing

How are shipping containers manufactured?

From Corten steel panels: laser cutting, roll-forming, press embossing, and robotic welding. The process includes shot blasting for surface prep, powder coating/painting, and final testing for structural integrity, weather resistance, and load capacity.

What materials are shipping containers made from?

Primarily Corten (COR-TEN) weathering steel (ASTM A588), which forms a protective patina. Floors are typically tropical hardwood (bamboo/apitong); corner castings are cast steel for crane and twist-lock compatibility.

What is APPL Containers' annual production capacity?

15,000 ISO shipping containers per year at its Bhavnagar, Gujarat facility, inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in September 2022 under the Make in India initiative.

Where is APPL Containers' manufacturing facility located?

Survey No. 131-B, 132, 132P1, Near Khodiyar Mandir, Bhavnagar-Rajkot Highway, Shampara (Khodiyar), Vartej, Bhavnagar, Gujarat 364060 — with robotic welding, laser cutting, shot blasting, and powder coating.

How long does it take to manufacture a shipping container?

A standard 20/40FT container typically requires 5–7 working days per unit in a modern automated facility. Bulk orders follow a production schedule with lead times by type and volume.

Category 3 — Tank Containers

What is a cement tank container?

An ISO-certified container for safe bulk transport of dry powders (cement, fly ash, lime). APPL's units offer 22,000–26,000L capacity, operate from -19°C to +80°C, and discharge pneumatically at 1.0–1.3 tonnes/minute.

What is an ISO tank container?

A cylindrical pressure vessel mounted in a standard ISO frame for liquids, gases, or dry bulk — compliant with IMDG, UN portable tank instructions, and CSC plate requirements.

Cement tank vs ISO tank container — what is the difference?

Cement tank = dry powders with pneumatic discharge. ISO tank = liquids/gases/hazardous via gravity or pressure. APPL's cement tanks are certified to ASME VIII Div.1, IMDG, CFR49, and ADR/RID.

What certifications does a cement tank container need?

IMDG, CFR49 (US Title 49), ADR/RID (European road/rail dangerous goods), ISO UIC, and ASME VIII Div.1 for pressure vessel design.

What is the discharge rate of APPL's cement tank containers?

1.0–1.3 tonnes/minute via integrated pneumatic unloading. Design pressure 0.2 MPa, test pressure 0.3 MPa, max gross weight 30,000–36,000 kg.

Category 4 — Specialised Containers

What is an open top container?

A container with a removable soft-top (tarpaulin) instead of a fixed roof, allowing crane loading from above — ideal for heavy machinery, industrial equipment, and oversized cargo.

What is a both-end-open container?

Also called a double-door or tunnel container — doors at both ends allow drive-through loading, useful for roll-on/roll-off cargo and long pipe materials.

What is a flat rack container?

A flat steel platform with collapsible end walls, no side walls or roof — for oversized, heavy, or irregular cargo like machinery, steel coils, and vehicles.

What is a coil container?

A container with a cradle-shaped floor that secures steel coils during sea freight, preventing shifting and reducing damage. APPL builds them to ISO specs.

What is a BESS container?

A Battery Energy Storage System container housing batteries, inverters, and cooling for grid-scale storage in solar/wind projects. APPL Containers Limited manufactures BESS containers for India's renewable energy sector.

Category 5 — Buying & Export

How do I order a shipping container from APPL Containers?

Request a proposal at applcontainers.com/get-proposal, call +91-9510656161, or email info@applcontainers.com. Bulk orders with customization (size, specs, coatings) are accepted.

Does APPL Containers export internationally?

Yes — exporting via Bhavnagar Port and Kandla (Deendayal) Port, serving the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

What is the difference between a 20FT and 40FT container?

20FT: 6,058mm length, 33.2 M³ capacity, 28,800 kg payload, 2,250 kg tare. 40FT: 12,192mm length, 67.7 M³ capacity, 28,800 kg payload, 3,650 kg tare. Same cross-section; the 40FT carries twice the volume at lower cost per cubic metre.

What is the Make in India initiative for container manufacturing?

A Government of India program promoting domestic manufacturing. APPL Containers Limited is a flagship beneficiary — its Bhavnagar facility, inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in September 2022, reduces India's dependence on imported containers.

Can APPL supply containers in bulk for large projects?

Yes — with 15,000 containers/year capacity, APPL Containers Limited supplies bulk orders for infrastructure, logistics, and industrial projects across standard, high-cube, specialized, and tank containers. Contact us for bulk pricing.
